The Real ID Act –Should we be worried?

On May 11, 2005, President Bush signed into law the “REAL ID Act of 2005,” which was attached to the “Emergency Supplemental Appropriation for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005” (H.R. 1268, P.L. 109-13). Title II of REAL ID—“Improved Security for Driver’s License’ and Personal Identification Cards”—repeals the provisions of a December 2004 law that established a cooperative state-federal process to create federal standards for driver’s licenses and instead directly imposes prescriptive federal driver’s license standards.

I would suggest that any one that does not know about this act start educating themselves immediately to what is going on behind the scenes in this country.

Many legislators and governors are speaking out against this act stating that this will give the federal government more power over the states, strip citizens of even more rights, and cost us billions of unnecessary dollars to implement.

By 2011, if you do not have this national ID card, you will not be allowed to travel via airplane, enter federal buildings, and there has been some talk of not being able to register your driver’s license. Many people also believe that this card will hold to much personal data that the government does not need to know about the individual.

Some conspiracy theorists state that this is just another step closer to a one-world government. Some religions are stating that this is just a step closer to the mark of the beast. Some people are comparing it to the Nazis requiring the German citizens to hold identification papers.

Many states have or are enacting legislation to protect their citizens from this law.

I hear many people on the right calling Obama a communist, a socialist, and a Marxist. In reality, the conservative government of the last administration pushed this. Where are all the far right conservatives complaining about big government fighting to stop this law?

What do you think? Do you think we need federal identification papers all in the name of security?

It depends, I mean a safer ID card wouldn't be that bad but if it contains a lot of data there might be a real privacy trespass. Should every public officer be able to see my whole history?
